Arthroscopy of the hip joint

Hip arthroscopy is a modern technique for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of damage or injuries in the joints of the pelvic corset. The procedure has nothing in common with traditional operations involving incisions and damage to a large area of the body. Arthroscopy is performed through small punctures (5 mm). One puncture is for insertion of a thin flexible tube with a camera at the end, and the other is for surgical instruments. Thus, with two or three punctures, accurate diagnosis and correction of damage is achieved.

INDICATIONS FOR ARTHROSCOPY

For young patients, the procedure is performed in case of injuries accompanied by joint pain. These include sports injuries of the hip, deformation or displacement of bones. The manipulation is also suitable for correcting the shape and putting the hip bones in their original position.

This operation is not suitable for patients with osteoarthritis.

General indications for all patients:

  • joint tear: in the cartilage ring;
  • hip joint compression;
  • Removal of any debris or fragments of the affected cartilage after the injury;
  • bone spurs, bunions.
  • inflammation of the joint mucus.

Any lesions of the hip joint can develop arthritis, which can be treated only by replacing the joint with a prosthesis.

Arthroscopy can slow or stop the development of arthritis. Especially if the damage is treated in the early stages.

HOW THE OPERATION GOES

After the results of an X-ray or MRI, the doctor determines the exact cause of the injury and prescribes diagnostics or diagnosis and treatment with an arthroscope.

For the operation, the patient chooses a convenient type of anesthesia: general or epidural anesthesia (where you do not feel any pain from the lower back to the lower extremities). The doctor marks and makes one or more punctures for the arthroscope and other surgical instruments. The punctures are minimal (5 mm) and will not be visible on the skin after healing. The procedure itself lasts from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the case. The punctures are closed with insoluble sutures or surgical staples.

You can go home the same day or the next day. In the first days, to reduce the load on the joint, you should use crutches (crutches).

REHABILITATION AFTER ARTHROSCOPY

The doctor prescribes a recovery plan individually for each patient. Vasyl Makarov has 25 years of experience in surgery and rehabilitation of varying degrees of complexity, so he always chooses procedures that help you recover as quickly as possible.

This may include joint stretching exercises and other physiotherapy recommendations. Mild background pain after surgery should stop completely in 3-6 months. Fluid movement may also be felt in the joint for some time. This is a normal process. After some time, the fluid is completely absorbed. After six months, the patient can return to dynamic movements and loads.

BENEFITS OF HIP ARTHROSCOPY

In open surgeries, there is always a small risk of damage to muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and infection. With arthroscopy, these risks are close to zero. This is also due to minimal trauma.

Also, thanks to modern technologies, arthroscopy provides excellent results, so the number of relapses is minimal. Patients recover quickly and return to their normal lifestyle. Especially for elderly people who are afraid to undergo classical surgery, this option of a minimally invasive procedure is easier to decide on. As a result, patients regain the mobility of their joints and stop the development of more severe deformities and inflammation.
